St Fillans

St Fillans sits a few hundred yards from the eastern shores of Loch Earn in some stunning scenery surrounded by the high peaks of Ben Vorlich (3,231ft) and Ben More (3,852ft) and smaller wooded hills.

The name "St fillans" refers to a Celtic missionary from Ireland called Faolan who brought Christianity to the region in the early 6th century.

Offshore is a manmade island (or crannog) thought to have originated in prehistoric times and to have also been the royal fort in Pictish times. Historical sites also includes the locations of some of the bloodiest clan wars of Scotland's' past.

Loch Earn is a watersports center
Loch Earn

The loch is unusual in having it's own 16 hour "tidal system", actually a seiching cause by prevailing winds, a phenomenon also found on Lake Geneva, Lake Garda, Lake Erie and Lake Baikal.

The region has become a famed water center catering for both fishing and water-sports: water skiing, canoeing, jet skis, Kayaks and sailing. In Aberfeldy, braver souls may wish to try white water rafting.

We can arrange boats, permits and tackle for those wishing to fish the Loch and River Earn, where 20lb salmon are caught annually, along with attractive medium sized trout, grayling and sea trout. The Earn has a late salmon run through September and October. Trout are worth pursuing from May onwards and Grayling between November and January.

Perthshire has over 30 golf courses, including world famous Gleneagles. St Fillans offers its own 9 hole course.

There are many walks around the area which embrace the majestic views. We are keen walkers and can suggest many walks to suit your needs. Many of the paths are also suitable for cycling and horse riding with sign posted trails and local companies to assist.

Other activities available, which we can book for you, include:

falconry from Brasco castle

archery

clay pigeon shooting

4X4 off road driving

tennis

bowling

sky diving

hot air ballooning

And of course, if it all sounds a little strenuous then you can always opt for a leisurely drink at one of the local hostelries!

Golf and other outdoor pursuits mean you'll never be bored!
